party
11:14 PM - Jan. 10, 2004
at my nephew's party my son
met his twin uncles. well,
not really uncles. they are my cousins
but i told my son to call them
uncle just the same.
he was fascinated looking at them.
they are 13 years old and still mirrors
if they didn't speak. one is soft-spoken,
appreciates poetry and quiet,
the other wants to hit and win
and play football. yet each
took my son's hand and swung him
like a pendulum and my aunt
was amazed that they would even
take interest. but after ten minutes
my son came back to me, and
the park for some reason was
quite empty. weird too,
since it was 72 degrees, sunny,
and the sky was very blue
for Los Angeles. i gave him
my football and he licked the laces
before he heard the squeak of the swings.
he ran. i ran.
we ran. we found an empty one
and he sat on my lap and we swung
for awhile. he giggled.
i just talked about the day,
the sky, my worries on being his father.
to be one
and to sit on your father's lap
and swing. after awhile
i got quiet and we just kept
ourselves there. we missed the cake-cutting.
i know i'm rambling.
i just don't know how to convey
how great that moment was.
that now this boy of mine is asleep
and i want to stay up late
and watch him sleep and think
wow, this is my boy.
he is my life.
