smooth
so it was Jen. Jen!
Jen was back in the office today.
Little Jen. Rowing Jen. two years ago moving
into a new house with her fiancee' Jen.
her hair was dark maple brown now,
not the sunny blonde i used to splash
with the green algae water
during our early morning sculls
around Castaic Lake. she was happy
to see me, she said. the faces
around the floor are so new.
i almost didn't notice her left hand,
the bright silver rings
around her middle finger, the savory blue
sapphire that almost displaced the void
on her ring finger. and i almost
didn't ask what happened
to your engagement ring, did you
lose weight, and my god
what did you do to yourself
you look good enough to eat. she was
the quiet after a door opening,
as if just below the water
of her blue eyes
i could see the need to get past
the explanation of two, three,
six months ago, and really,
i don't think i heard anything
she said as we both stood still
in the middle of the quiet hallway
besides hey mike,
do you remember me? and i
was back in high school, gawking
at the first girl i loved
with dark rose vest, tits
smooth as bright
apricots, and my ribs
acheing for
her name.
